In a strange twist of fate, a Japanese lawmaker named Satoshi Hamada has formally proposed that Japan establish a national Bitcoin reserve. Yes, his name is Satoshi, and he’s advocating for his country to stockpile Bitcoin.

Hamada is a member of Japan’s National Diet, which is basically like their congress, and he submitted the proposal on December 11, igniting a conversation about the growing global trend of governments considering Bitcoin as part of their reserves. Hamada’s political party only holds two seats in the Diet’s upper house, so it will be an uphill battle to get this bill to pass, but the lawmakers first name is making for some good headlines.

Bitcoin Reserves Going Global

Japan isn’t alone in considering a Bitcoin reserve. Countries like Russia, Brazil, and even the United States have seen policymakers consider the idea of Bitcoin reserves. Earlier this year, U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis called for a strategic Bitcoin reserve with a target of 1 million BTC for the U.S. Treasury. Meanwhile, over in Brazil, lawmakers proposed a bill in November calling for the country to diversify its holdings by adding Bitcoin to its vaults. Even Poland is in on the action, with a presidential candidate advocating for a crypto stash.

But back to Japan, where Hamada’s Bitcoin proposal is in good company. National Diet member Yuichiro Tamaki, leader of the influential Democratic Party for the People, has also championed Bitcoin-friendly policies, including tax cuts and regulatory reforms for crypto holders and companies.

This surge in Bitcoin interest comes as it recently hit an all-time high of over $103,000. As of publication, the National Diet has not responded to Hamada’s proposal.
